As many of you know, I used to work as a full-time Funeral Director, however, I gave this up when my good friend was murdered. Deciding that life was too short but wanting to stay in the funeral industry, I became a part-time chauffeur / bearer. I am also on-call 1 week in 4 from 5pm Friday evening until 8.30am Monday morning and then 5pm until 8.30am every week day evening, until the following Friday. This week happens to be my week on-call and, so far, it has been quite nice because I have only had the one call out which was at about 3.45pm this afternoon. I had to collect an elderly lady who had died at home after a long battle with cancer. On our arrival, she was surrounded by her very brave and stoic family who left us to do what we had to do. When we left them, we promised that we would look after their loved one as if she were our own, which I believe is the least we can do. It is such a privilege to be able to do this last thing for people, I am very, very lucky and proud to do what I do for a living. There really isn’t another job that I can think of that would give me that much satisfaction. It is also probably the only profession that doesn’t like to be busy because we know that, for every deceased person, there is a grieving family and even one grieving family is one too many.
Makes you think.
