My working week can be very hectic at times, so much so that, as I work part-time, I sometimes have no clue what day it is! Today doesn’t even feel like a Sunday. Most people measure the end of a day and the start of the next by the sleep in between. When you work shifts (As I did for 11 years) where you sometimes sleep twice in one day, or you get called out at Midnight, as I did last night, days and nights often blur.
This morning, I found myself awake at about 6.30am and didn’t know what day it was. A quick check on my calendar told me that it was Sunday and further investigation revealed that I had nothing to do all day!! So, I decided that, today, I was going to enjoy the simple things.
I made my wife a cup of tea in bed and then sat and read my writing magazine. After this, we got up and took Bob Dog for a nice long walk where we let him choose where he went and what he sniffed, within reason, and for how long! Once back at home, I made my wife scrambled eggs on toast and then we set off in the car to see my mother. After a couple of hours with her, we stopped off at Next so that my wife could get a new top for work and then we made our way back home. By this time, the sun was up and, whilst my wife was sorting out various things indoors, I put some silicone sealant on the flat roof of next doors outhouse where it joins the wall of ours. The felt is old and has come away from the wall and, subsequently, whenever it rains really hard, we can watch a small trickle of water run down our gym wall! Once all the sealant was in place, I strimmed and mowed the grass and then took a well earned rest with a cup of tea in our garden pod. As the sun went behind the clouds, the pod started to get cold, so we took Bob for another walk and, on the way back, stopped at our local village shop to catch up on village life and grab a few supplies. We continued with Bob’s walk and finished it off by letting him have a long run around the field next to the small copse behind our house. Back indoors, Rachel cooked dinner whilst I sorted out some other bits and pieces and, after our dinner of sausage, mash and vegetables, we finished with jam sponge and custard. Now, Rachel is sat downstairs watching Gogglebox whilst I sit and write this and research elliptical cross trainers because I’m going to buy a nice second-hand one tomorrow.
As you can see, although it’s been quite a busy day, it has just been us doing the simple things in life. Daily or weekly chores, walking the dog, catching up with village life and just generally relaxing before the start of another busy week tomorrow. Sometimes, you have to stop and really take in everything and everyone around you. Life isn’t about rushing around and accumulating stuff, it’s about being happy with what you have and enjoying the simple things!!
