When my beautiful wife was aged just 2, she sat on her first pony. From that moment on she was hooked on anything horse related and, during her time at junior school, rode to and from school on one! At 13, she had a Saturday job in a local shop so that she could contribute towards the running and keeping costs of her new horse, which her parents saved hard to buy her. Over the years she has bought and sold several horses, but chose to totally retire from both horse owning and riding about 5 years ago.
Last weekend, we ran into her old stable owner in our local and he suggested that she, ‘Pop up to the yard and see all the changes we’ve made.’ Finding ourselves at a loose end, we did just that and were very impressed by all we saw! Whilst up there we met the new yard manager and asked her if there was anyone at the stables who was looking for a horse share. This is when someone owns the horse and pays for all the bills etc. but someone else rides, grooms and mucks out and helps towards livery costs. This is very common nowadays as horses have become quite expensive. The manager said that, there was someone looking to do that and said that she had just gone out for a hack on the horse in question. We waited around for said person to return, whereupon my wife expressed her interest in the horse share and an arrangement was duly made for her to ride the horse this morning!! We have spent the best part of last week buying all the necessary kit again as my wife sold all hers when she thought she had given up forever!
This morning, we drove up to the stable, where my wife met the young lady concerned and, between them, they tacked up the horse and took it out to the outdoor arena. The young lady horse owner rode the horse around for a bit, just so that my wife could see how she handled, and then my wife took over the reins. After a nervous start, my wife soon had the mare walking, trotting and cantering with ease and looked as if she had never been away! To say I was proud of her is an understatement! A further arrangement has now been made between them both and my wife is going out for a ride on the horse on Monday and, all being well at the end of it, she will happily to take on the horse share!
